Bodywork can be a valuable treatment for injuries, health and wellness and be done in conjunction with other therapies. I have extensive training in therapeutic massage, structural integration and physical therapy. I work using the principles of structural integration, seeking to restore balance and ease to the body and improve body awareness. The work has been described as ‘a conversation between two intelligent systems.’ I act as a facilitator using hands on soft tissue approaches to help align the bones, improve kinesthetic awareness and ease soft tissue restrictions. Clients are active participants in this process, performing movements as I perform soft tissue work to help restore glide and enhance proprioceptive inputs to the body. Clients periodically get off the table to feel the impact of the work on their system. Clients are also often given home practices to help maintain the gains made during their sessions.
Structural Integration (SI) is a form of bodywork pioneered by Dr. Ida Rolf. In a methodical series of sessions, SI focuses on our fascial connective tissue system and seeks to restore postural alignment, ease of movement and enhanced proprioception that can help change the way you use and inhabit your body. The Anatomy Trains Structural Integration is a 12 session series which addresses the body line by line, front, back sides and spirals as well as deeper structures to help balance areas of increased tension or compression, ease restrictions and promote full body awareness. Unlike traditional massage using oil and with clients as passive recipients under a sheet the entire session, it is as Dr. Rolf said, a ‘conversation between two intelligent systems’. It is a deeper form of touch applied without oil. Clients wear underwear or 2 piece bathing suit or shorts. Clients are also active participants in the session performing movements to help enhance tissue glide and getting off the table periodically to feel their body in gravity. Sessions often include ‘homework’ of body awareness practices to help maintain the changes made during the session.
